The Makaha Sons Foundation
A non-profit 501 (c) (3)
The Makaha Sons have given to worthwhile causes. They have done benefit concerts for Mental Help Hawai’i for over ten years. They have also helped the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Organization, the American Cancer Society, Maluhia Nursing Home for the Elderly, the Talking Book Readers’ Club for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Easter Seals, PBS Hawai’i, the Hawai’i Bone Marrow Registry, the Honolulu Symphony for Youth Program and various hälau functions across the state, to name a few.
In June 2004, the Makaha Sons established the Makaha Sons Foundation to further their charitable activities. In 2005, the Makaha Sons Foundation received its 501 (c) (3) status. The mission of the Foundation is to preserve, promote and perpetuate Hawaiian music, dance, language, traditions, and history.
The Makaha Sons Foundation has developed its scholarship program to further the organization’s charitable purposes by providing postgraduate financial assistance to Hawai’i’s high school seniors to provide them with an opportunity to learn and appreciate the music, dance, culture, history and humanities of Hawai’i. The scholarships are meant to provide the recipients with educational opportunities that they would not otherwise receive if they had not received the awards.
The Makaha Sons Foundation’s long term goals, include the following:
1. Improving the cultural environment and quality of life for young music makers through a proposed Mentoring Program:
The Makaha Sons have already taken numerous young artists under their wings, helping them produce albums and giving them the opportunity to perform in large venues here in Hawai’i, the continental USA, and Japan. Some artists the Sons have helped include Hoku Zuttermeister, Raiatea Helm, Natalie Ai Kamauu, Nā Kama, and Barry Kimokeo. Such a Mentoring Program would generate musical breakthroughs for future generations of Hawaiian music professionals, public awareness of the young musicians of Hawai’i.
2. Bringing our traditions to the children of Hawai’i:
The Foundation want to provide future generations with the opportunities to create stronger ties to their roots. By exposing younger students to Hawaiian music, poetry, language, dance, and history, we hope to awaken deep appreciation of our culture, which will last a lifetime.
The Makaha Sons’ beliefs may be summarized this way: “People helping people to perpetuate traditional Hawaiian music and keeping the culture, history and hula of Hawai’i alive.”
